the 9 year can read but not well. he doesnt like chapter books because they are to long? and all the beginner readers are to easy for him. He cant read harry potter or anything like that because it is to hard.

This site has LONG lists of books for different ages. Many of these titles will be things you might have read as a child; others are newer.

My girls are 5 and 7, and lately, we've all been enjoying the A to Z Mystery series by Ron Roy. They're chapter books, but they have enough pictures to keep my 5-yo interested, too. The girls love trying to solve the mysteries before the main characters do. My 7-yo can read them on her own, and I will also read to both girls.

Some other ideas... [Some are better for the 5-yo or 9-yo, but most should work for both.]

Skippyjon Jones (there are several of these)

    "Chester" by Melanie Watt

"An Undone Fairy Tale" by Ian Lendler

classic tales like Hansel & Gretel, The Little Red Hen, etc.

"Uh Oh Cleo" by Jessica Harper and Jon Berkeley

    "Nate the Great" series

Encyclopedia Brown -- chapters are short, and there's a mystery in each chapter, so it reads more quickly

    Amelia Bedelia series

    Cam Jansen series

    Henry & Mudge series

The best thing you can do is to take them to the library and check out a variety of books. You'll get an idea of what interests them, and you can continue to look for similar books. There are lots of different character books, too, if they have any specific interests there -- Clifford, Scooby Doo, Star Wars, Spongebob, etc.

Your 9-year-old (and maybe the 5-yo as well) might be interested in some biographies -- sports heroes, Olympians, musicians, inventors/scientists, national or world leaders, etc. Other non-fiction ideas might include animals, customs from a different country, science books (like what causes a tornado or how a computer works), or the human body (I know my kids love to read about bodily functions like why we pee, poop, and burp ;-) ).

There are lots of great books out there! Have fun!

For your 9 year old, see if he would be interested in the Magic Tree House books. I enjoyed that when I was about his age. The first one is Dinosaurs at Dark. They are pretty short little things, which he should enjoy

As for the 5 year old, you could read him something like Alice in Wonderland or the Narnia books or something classic like that. My mother always read the Wizard of Oz books to me. We got through all of the ones by the original author and quite a few of the ones by his son and other writers.
