Help with extreme values please.?

Sometimes you need to _______ some point to get a good approximation of the location of extreme value(s)

    You would have to check your notes to see what answer is sought. There can be many choices.

    For example, you could approximate a value ; For example, if you need to find a value around sqrt(2), you could use 1.414 and that might give you a rough idea.

    You could "approach" the value (finding the limit is a formal way of doing this)

    For example, it may be impossible to find a value at 0, but you can try using 1/2, then 1/4, then 1/8, then 1/16, 1/32... until your calculator gives up.

    In functions of two variables (or in complex numbers) you could "circle" the point.

    For example, you can't find the answer at (x, y) = (2, 3)

    But you can make an equation for a circle centred on that point, with a tiny radius. Then you take different points on that circle and find the value of the function all around.

    So, it depends what you had been learning (or reading about) just before you got that question.
