The first question is if your white kitten has eyes of different colors. A white cat with one blue eye and one green, yellow or brown eye is often deaf, so that could be your issue. The kitten doesn't know it is being sneaked up on, and defends itself. If both eyes are blue, probably deaf. If only one blue eye, deaf probably only in one ear.

The other aspect is how do you show affection? Do you leave your kitten with the idea that your hands are toys, by trying to tickle him, etc.?

A kitten that bites and scratches can be trained not to do that. If not deaf, then hiss at him and say NO when he bites or scratches. You want to give a negative response, and his mother would have trained him when he misbehaved by hissing, so you do the same.

If deaf, you will have to find a way to get his attention and show displeasure at biting and scratching, as long as you are certain you didn't startle him. I would try shaking a finger at him, as well as a frowning face, and perhaps hissing. Even though he wouldn't hear the hiss, he may know it seemed like his mother did to him.

I will have to disagree with some I breed Maine Coons and I have a white female with gold eyes. Never had a deaf kitten. I know many blue eyed whites and they are not deaf. I do know of one gold eyed white who is deaf. So out of many white cats I know of only one deaf one. I don't know how it works with domestic cats or other breeds but this is what I know from breeding Maine Coons and I have been doing it for 11 years.

My white cats and kittens are sweet and playful, never aggressive or responds with anger.

What I know is that the kittens will most likely have the personality of the parents. And the people who socialize them makes a difference also.

I have never had the "crazy white cat syndrome" at all.

LOL yes I experienced it when I was around 11. I was at my neighbors' house and was reaching my arm out to get a barbie doll and their white cat (who has now passed on) pretty much mauled my arm with bites and scratches. Needless to say I was pretty afraid to go near her after that.

  • 97% of all white cats are deaf so maybe thats the problem it just gets startled and it responds this way. usually white cats with blue eyes are deaf.
