If you were a member of the Continental Congress, would you have voted in favor of independence?
Do you think it would be worth the risk, considering that anyone who did was automatically seen as a traitor to Great Britain?

Since I'm sure you want a totally honest answer, I'll swallow my patriotic pride and give one to the best of my ability. If I had been alive then and a woman much like the kind I am today, I'd have been fearful of the repercussions. Even if women back then had power and might of their own, I probably would have been reluctant to make a declaration or support one for independence unless I was outraged by atrocities and could no longer, in good conscience, remain loyal to a monarch who had ordered such atrocities. Because I'd have been fearful for the safety of my children, I most likely would have taken a lukewarm rather than passionate and more public stance. However, if I'd been married to a strong patriot, I may have taken a measure of courage from him and engaged in supportive action rather than outright rebellion. All this aside, I am still proud of and admire our forefathers and their courage and will always be grateful for the sacrifices they made to build this country.

Yes, I would have voted in favor of independence. I love my country, and I'm glad to live in a free nation. I could have been seen as a traitor to Great Britain, but if it meant escaping from tyranny, and living in a free and independent nation, I wouldn't have thought it was a big deal (to me). And Happy Independence Day to you!
