You don't have to dress up, but you need to look nice.
For women, a simple dress, or skirt and blouse, or slacks and blouse are fine - just no flip flops or tennis shoes. You can even wear jeans if they are nice (dark, fitted, no holes) and you pair it with a cute top.
For men, slacks and a button down shirt or polo shirt, again just no tennis shoes or sandals. And I think shorts are tacky all around.
Theater in New York is pretty casual except on opening nights, but people usually try to look at least semi pulled together!
