Looking at buying some skis...what do you think?

I found a good deal on some skis I like. Volkl Oceana. I'm a novice/intermediate skier so that's right in my range. I found some for a good deal. I usually just rent my skis when I get to the area.

I need new boots this year though so I don't know what brand I'll be buying. My lasts were Solomon. I've always just handed my boots to the rental counter when getting the skis and they did it. When buying used skis, does it matter if the bindings aren't the brand of boots you buy? Many online mention "solomon bindings". Would you buy your skis when you don't have your boots yet?

Any help would be great as it's my first pair of skis.

Ski boots for Alpine skiing are all of a DIN standard and the bindings are of the same standard. Buy the best boots that fit your feet and add custom foot beds. Your boots should last about 200 days of skiing before you need to change them. For most recreational skiers that is several years. For professional skiers that is 2-3 years and by then they may be obsolete.

A good pair of skis should last you 2-3 years before your skills and technology force you to replace them. The technology change is usually in the bindings, not so much the skis. Salomon, Marker, Look, Tyrolia, and Atomic are the major binding makers. They also will change the color and names for specific ski makers so the skis and bindings are a match. Look was a Rossignol and Dynastar package, K2 and Marker, Head is the owner of Tyrolia and also the Tyrolia is on Fischer, all are DIN standard.

Buy the boots first and shop for skis, buy a set that are above your skill level so you can improve but not race equipment.

no, it does not matter if the skis and bindings are the same brand, but some bindings dont fit on other skis, meaning they will not fit on the plate that goes with the ski. for example, volkl uses marker bindings, dynastar uses look bindings, but other brands like fischer and rossignol use their own bindings (which are superb)

boots will fit in any binding as long as you have your binding mounted to the size of your boot. i suggest buying boots and bindings at the same time, because sometime you can package the whole deal to get a better deal. but yes, you can buy skis without having boots (though it is not wise)
