    Taco Bell's taco sauce

    1 6-oz can tomato paste

    3 cups water

    2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

    1-1/2 tablespoons chili powder

    2-1/2 teaspoons salt

    2 teaspoons cornstarch

    2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar

    1 tablespoon minced dried onion

    1. Combine the tomato past with the water in a saucepan over medium

    heat. Stir until smooth.

    2. Add the cayenne pepper, chili powder, salt, cornstarch, vinegar,

    and dried onion. Stir.

    3. Heat the mixture to boiling. Continue to stir about 3 minutes and

    remove from the heat.

    4. Let the sauce stand until cool, and then put in a tightly sealed

container and refrigerate. This will last 1 to 2 months. Makes 3-1/2

    cups.

A box of "Old El Paso Taco Dinner Kit" with 12 shells, the seasoning, and some mild taco sauce, costs $3.19 at Stop & Shop. You have to add a pound of ground meat, which costs about $4. A head of lettuce costs $1.79; you won't use it all, but you buy it by the whole head. An 8 oz bag of shredded cheddar is another $3. So right now we're looking at $12 to make 12 tacos, or about $1 each. At Taco Bell, a crunchy taco (which has lettuce and cheese) costs $0.89, if I recall correctly. Now, it might be possible to make them more cheaply than buying the kit. And even with the kit, they'll probably taste better than Taco Bell's. But they'll take your time and effort to make. Is your time and effort worth more than $1.20? Mine is...

to make good home made taco sauce start with a can of crushed tomatoes to that add some chopped green onion, an small clove of fresh garlic finely chopped or crushed, 2 teaspoons of chopped cilantro, about 1/4 teaspoon of oregano if not ground then rub it between your hands, some salt & pepper. this is all according to taste so adjustments can be made as desired. Put in a bowl & stir together. There are 2 ways to spice this up. 1 way is to add chili tepins (mexican dried red peppers) smashed an add to mixture or you can get some jalapenos & roast & peel & dice them & add them to mixture. they can also be steamed as well

You could try combining a regular run of the mill hot sauce, and add a bit of taco seasoning into it.

but taco seasoning like you put in hamburger to make the taco meat-only instead of putting it in the meat, you buy sour cream and mix it in the sour cream. then you buy lettuce and cheeese to top it off. Shredded mexican cheese usually is best.
