When did the onomatopoeia of a firearm discharging change from "bang bang" to "pew pew?"?

My mom was making that "pew pew" sound 15 years ago and now "bang bang" seems to have completely gone away for "pew pew."

    Pew pew isn't a firearm, it's a laser gun.
