Have you ever hitchhiked long distance?
In 1963, I hitchhiked from Lansing, Michigan to Seattle to San Francisco and back to Grand Rapids. I was gone nine days, it cost me eleven dollars. Something between five and six thousand miles. Went back and forth from Michigan to New York City three or four times. Then I got married. No more hitchhiking.

No. I wasn't born until 1968 and my entire life I was told never to get into a car with strangers. I did have an adventurous friend named Jerry McGuire, and he and I hitchhiked to a local state university's football game. The guy who picked us up was an alumnus. We sat with him. V.I.P. He was wonderful. And I think he liked that we were daring and risked our lives to see "his team." It was my first and last time.
