Why do so many people have this mistaken impression about Merry and Pippin from Lord of the Rings?

I've looked through many Lord of the Rings questions and nearly every time I see one regarding merry and pippin there's always at least one person who refers to them as brothers. Why is that? They aren't brothers. While they are blood related (nearly every hobbit is related by blood or marriage and both the Tooks and the brandybucks were large well established families), but they aren't brothers. Did the different last names not give that away or something? I don't understand. Can someone explain it to me please?

Update:

The books are my absolute FAVORITE EVER! Although, the omission of Tom didn't get me nearly as much as Arwen at the Fords of Bruinen. I was shouting "WTF is she doing there!!?" But I've been reading the books since I learned to read and they've been read to me since long before that. I've read wheel of time and I liked it. But it isn't something I'd read again within a year or more.

I felt that the movies were ok but I guess a fair percentage of people who saw the LOTR movies never read the books and didn't pay much attention to small details such as the character's last names etc... I mean when I saw the Fellowship of the Ring in the for the first time I remember shouting out "Where's Tom Bombadil!!" and none of my friends knew what I meant. I mean Tolkien literally wrote the history of an entire world, there is just so much detail that went into the creation of his world!!

Anyway I'm a pretty big LOTR fan. I also recommend you read the Wheel of Time series if you haven't.

Also can't wait for the Hobbit Part 1 in 2012!!

    All the best.

I'm not a big fan, so I've never watched any of the movies all the way through, but they looked alike, didn't they? I could tell the other hobbits apart fairly easily (Sam and Bilbo and so forth) but those two just seemed to be very similar, so I also assumed they were related.

This question is actually the first time I've heard them be referred to as brothers. Maybe I'm on the wrong sites, but I see more people giving them a more...intimate relationship than siblings for no apparent reason. So to answer your question: I have no clue :/

I think it's because they're both small and are always together throughout the movies. You just kind of expect them to be related or brothers.
