You do not modify a router to provide a static IP address to any LAN device, regardless of whether the LAN device is a pc or any othe LAN device.
To assign a static LAN IP address it must meet these criteria:
1. It must be on the same subnet as the private side of the router (same subnet also means same subnet mask and default gateway).
2. It must not have an IP address in the DHCP IP address pool as defined by the router.
3. It must be unique, not used by any other LAN device.
The static IP address is assigned on the device itself (the pc, print server, etc).
Let's assume that your LAN subnet is 192.168.1.0/24 with gateway 192.168.1.1, with the gateway being the router; the LAN is peer to peer (no server); DNS and DHCP provided by LAN; and DHCP pool is 192.168.1.50-100. Recall that being a 24 bit subnet (/24) the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. We now want to provide a static IP address to your HP printer. We already know the DNS and Default gateway must be the same as router (192.168.1.1) and the subnet mask is 25.255.255.0. We do not know the IP address. We know that it MUST NOT be in the DHCP range of 192.168.50-192.168.1.100. We also know, being a /24 that the highest IP address is 192.168.1.254; we do not know if it is in use. To see if it is used, open command prompt (start, run, all programs, command prompt) and at the > prompt type in ping 192.168.1.254 and hit enter; if we have 4 unsuccessful replies, this address is available; if we have successful replies, we then go down to 192.168.1.253 and check; we continue down until we have an address with no replies. This is now a suitable IP address and we will assign it to the HP printer. We use Internet Explorer with the assigned dynamic IP address entered into the IE browser and hit enter; then we enter user name and password and then go to IP address assignment section (see manual for this) and make the change.

If it asks for username and password, default is:
admin with no password.
