Twilight fans, why doesn't starlight hurt vampires?

Stars are just suns, some stars have the same composition of light that ours does.

Update:

OK I fess up I never read the books or saw the movies...I thought sunlight killed vampires; it does everywhere else...

Update 2:

Well like I said I didn't read the books...can't believe how seriously people take a question like this... I have had some of the books read to me though:

Dude, Twilight vampires are nothing like the vampires we USED to know. I'd say since the sun is the star closest to Earth, no. And reverse that, the sun is just a star. So, no. Hope I helped? ;)

Have you read Twilight? The sun doesn't hurt those silly Twilight vampires, it just makes them sparkle.

But if you are actually talking about vampires in general, then here's a little thought experiment for you. We've all had sunburn at some point, but what about starburn? Or moonburn? Does it make sense yet?

No? Jeez OK I'll explain is more simply. Light from our sun is far more intense than light from the stars. Low levels of light probably just don't effect the vampires, but when you crank up the intensity is burns them. A bit like our retinas.

I'd love to give you a specific answer to this question, but if I'm honest I'll just say that Meyer didn't consider it when she wrote the book. As with all novels regarding fantasy and fiction there are some aspects and mistake you just have to overlook to enjoy the story itself. Twilight specifically is riddled with such mistakes, but there's not a lot that can be done about it now.

If I did have to hazard a guess as to why starlight did not effect vampires in the twilight series (as sunlight does not harm them, just causes their skin to 'sparkle'), I'd say it's because the rays emitted from stars are not as powerful as those from the sun, as they are much further away. In the same way, sun rays are still present on the cloudy days chosen in 'Forkes,' they're just not strong enough to have an effect on the vampires.

In a book called "Midnight Sun" - Twilight from Edward's point, at some point Edward mentions another vampire name Tanya saying "she sparkles a little from the stars" so starts are small suns as you say and as I read it makes them sparkle too! :)

Don't try to dig too deep, I read the books and it's obvious Meyer didn't consider a lot of facts when she wrote them.

It's fictional anyways, doesn't have to make sense.

  • Um why are you talking about this filthy series anyway? Stephen Meyer is a disgrace to writing and books in general.

I didn't think the sunlight HURT them; it just made them all sparkly and gave away their true nature.

Starts don't give you a "starburn" either.

heck idk, who wants to get so technical? It's a fictional book.
