Hepatitis C is a virus that enters the body and uses the

liver cells to replicate itself. As it uses the cells, the cell

dies off and it moves onto the next to use it. You can

tell how much virus replication is happening by looking

    at the viral load results.

When the liver cells become damaged, the immune

system of the body respond to this damage and causes

inflammation inside the liver. This can cause the liver

to enlarge in size. Because the blood doesn't flow

well through the liver now, it will back up into the spleen

and cause the spleen to enlarge, also.

People can live with hepatitis C for many years before

this takes place. The doctor can see the enlargement

in both of these organs on an ultrasound or Ct scan.

The doctor can also check the liver to see how the

blood is flowing through the liver. As more cells die

off, scar tissue will form inside the liver which will

block more blood flow. The best test to determine

how far advance in the disease, someone is, is by

    a liver biopsy.

As the blood isn't able to flow through the liver well,

it will start to back up into the Portal vein...this

causes pressure inside this vessel and is known

as Portal Hypertension. It also backs up into smaller

vessel that are not used to this pressure and high

amounts of blood. They are known as varies and

they can have weak spots that can balloon outward

and break open. They are usually located in the

esophagus, rectum, and belly button area. Any

blood seen in the sputum, vomit, or rectal area

should be checked immediately. It may become

an emergency situation, as people with liver disease

bruise and bleed very easily because the liver isn't

able to make clotting factors, efficiently, to help the

    blood to clot.

I hope this information has been of some help to you.

    Best wishes.
