How do I get rid of too many start up items?
I have a zillion start up items and don't know why or where they came from. How do I get rid of them to speed things up?

Just re-install your Operating System. Or go to Add and Remove programs and delete all the items you dislike. If you have random junk and can't take it anymore. Just save your important files on a USB and re-install your Operating System. You should have a disc.

you can use msconfig as the beerman suggested
but a better tool is Norton Utilities.
with it you can:
- fix your registry
- defragment you registry
- configure startup services
- configure startup programs
you can download it and try it for 30 days I think and it fully works during the trial period!
