Do you think it's appropriate for adoptive parents to "change" the ethnic names of children from different?

countries?

For example, a parent is adopting a child, 6 years old, and this child already has a name (from country of origin), is it appropriate for the parent to change or sway the child into having an American name ( could include other countries, just that the name will be "appropriate" for that country)?

Would you let them keep their name or do something different?

As a parent, they have to right to call their child whatever they want, but being that the kid will have paretns of a different heritage changing their name as well would seem like its taking away part of their identity or something.

Kids who are adopted by same race parents already end up with enough identity issues wondering about their past families so I can imagine it'd be a little harder for a child with parents of a different race because they so blatantly look different.

But the most important thing is that the kid ends up with a good home and a loving family. Having your name changed is a small price to pay when compared to living in foster homes for all of their life. Its not that big of a deal.

Of course. The child will be more accepted with a new name.

I adopted a beautiful black baby and her name was Laquishia. There is no way in hell I would let her keep that name. I gave her a lovely African inspired name. I don't mind ethnic names, but never "ghetto" ones

It depends on how old the child is. If they are a baby then yes it is ok. For a six year old I would let them choose.

It is child abuse and to put false identity creates later on a resentment and may lead to criminal life
