SF: Do you like what I'm calling the "field" where you can travel faster then light (sort of like hyperspace)?
In my story the protagonists can travel via portals/wormholes, (a bit like in Stargate, you know).
You can only "lock onto" a destination if there is a gravity field, like a plane or star, you can't warp to empty space.
The point was that this "zone" through which you travel is structured differently than the normal universe, so, say, the closest planet in a certain direction in real space isn't recognizable when you try to warp to it, it's like you're looking into a whole new disposition of planets and stars.
So I need a name for this concept. I think I might be calling it "the Cheese". because you move through it and emerge in the "holes" that are the stars.
I think it's expressive, and funny at the same time. Plus the protagonists aren't military, like "Starfleet" So they can be as silly as they want.
(so it's going to be "we're travelling by Warp" "we're opening a Warp portal" but "The nearest point in the Cheese", "Accessing the Cheese", "Our position in the Cheese"...)*
What do you think of the name?
What would you call it?
Yeah, it's supposed to have comedic value. It's soft SF
I'm not using hyperspace because it's not hyperspace, it's just like a "sense" through which their technology sees space.
(I know holes aren't connected they're not supposed to travel through the holes, just emerge in the holes. Each hole is a possible destination.)
Hypercheese! XDDD

If it's meant to be funny, then "Cheese" would work quite well. How about "Hypercheese", since it's like a (Swiss) cheese but in more dimensions? If you want a more serious name, consider "web", "net", "network", "flux" or "maze". Any of those could be prefixed with "hyper-". Plain old "hyperspace" could work too, since nobody knows what hyperspace is really like, or whether it even exists.

That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Sorry, but the whole "Cheese" analogy only applies to a few types of cheese (namely Swiss) and the holes aren't straight anyway. Some don't even go anywhere. If it is comedic in nature, then maybe the "Cheese" could be used as an analogy (although I would suggest that it smells horribly and you can get stuck), but hyperspace being the commonly-used term doesn't mean you should avoid it like rotting Limburger.

I think it's absolutely stupid...if you are going for a comedic approach, then defiantly go for it. If it's for characterization then don;t make it the proper name. Instead make it what the group calls it as a joke or what not.
