Any anti virus can have a bad update it happens. Last year AVG had a bad update in Europe that really messed up thousand of computers. They ended up giving everyone a free year. I would go to Mcafee support and look for the problems there. It seems to me they did have a problem about a week ago.

Both McAfee and Norton can cause PC stability and performance issues (and don't catch all that many viruses). I'd boot into safe mode to see if it does it (tap F8 on boot up, select safe mode with networking). I'd recommend going with AVG or Avira, personally, but that's up to you.
