Why are so many people just plain stupid?

I can see your question is framed more from a political standpoint so I will answer it as such. There will always be people of less intelligence and there will always be poor for a variety of reasons. Left to their own demise things will work out and an equilibrium is maintained just like in nature with predators and prey keeping things in balance. When an entity such as government tries to play God there are always problems; Ever since the new deal and Johnson's war on poverty things have been screwed up. The poor do not have to worry about their actions because they know they can always eat if they want to. Lately the government has set a terrible example, It started with the Chrysler bailout in the eighty's they are still weak today so what good did it do. Poorly managed companies should fail and make room for properly run businesses that serve their customers efficiently.

The short answer is the government is training and conditioning people and corporations to not be responsible for their actions and feeding breeding machines in the lower classes of the population. Logic dictates that if the people of low intelligence are having the majority of the children the mean average of intelligence in this country will continue to go down regardless of efforts done to shore up the school systems.

I personally will be responsible and carry on my life in a moral and self sufficient manner, but since we are a voting republic I think it is too late for us to recover without drastic action. How many people will be willing to vote down their handouts and get to work? Therein lies the answer to your question.

All people I think are born with a drive to be extremely self-interested and self-gratifying. That's just normal. Our environemnt, culture, religion and family help curb those urges and direct them in other ways. Many people who are not positively influenced in these ways are unable to supress their desires and live their life in a self-serving, ignorant and ultimately, stupid manner. I think with the deterioration of family values, religious belief and societal values, these types of people are becoming more and more common. Its a sad situationa and I'm not sure what can be done other than a "grass roots" commitment by people to teach their kids better and the parents to walk the walk.

For one example of many, do you think getting divorced is a good example for kids? Its saying that your happiness is more important than their kids happiness. You NEED to have roamnce/love/a partner or they can't have two parents. People go to great lenghts to justify this to themsleves because thery know deep down they are sacrificing the best environment for their own personal needs and fulfillment. THAT is where things get out of whack and it goes downhill.

It is strange and you have to think in the future in school.. kids can be very mean with names. Seriously, think about it. I'm not fond of Madlyn, but I do like Maggie or Melody... keeping with the "music theme." It also seems to flow ith the last name too. Melody Cartieur... Maggie Cartieur. An idea.. perhaps for a middle name a middle name of a fav musician you both like? Remember.. keep in mind how it will sound and flow.. Good luck!
