Why would you hire a lawyer for inheritance?

A friend of mine hired a flat fee lawyer for his fathers will I guess, the lawyer is refusing to release anything until the last $300 of the flat fee is paid.

Is this legal?

Update:

Oh I jusst didn't know that there was even a need for a lawyer.

And I don't loan, or ask for money, contract or not, they aren't enforseable without following them from job to job$20 at a pop.

Most wills are cut and dry and the only reason a family member would need an attorney (lawyer) to get their fair share (or lions share) is because they are not certain that the court will be able to uphold the conditions of the will. If your friend wants to borrow 300 from you - get a note from him, stating the terms of the loan. Good Luck! By the way, attorneys can demand upfront & total payment if they're flat fee!

It does not matter if it is or not - this is why.

Does your friend want a lawyer suing him?

If the lawyer gives the money without getting paid ,

the lawyer will turn around and sue the heck out of him.

It's not pretty to have a lawyer sue you directly.

Is what legal? The lawyer requesting payment in advance? Many people require payment in advance.
