Is the Phantom of the Opera considered an actual opera?

I was under the impression it was a musical that's plot is centered around a fictional opera company. Beat ya to it, Semper Fi.. ;P

    Mod,

it's an Opera. I see by the method of the way you asked the question that you biased the answer in advance (talk about soliciting a particular response). Most people who say it is "not an Opera" are likely people who desire their Opera's to be only in Italian, French, Spanish, or any other language outside of English.

(That was good removing the name calling. Wonder why you did that? Rhetorical Question...go sing in the rain).

Phantom is an OPERA, Contemporary and in English.

    Opera is the only answer.

    All the best!

Phantom is a MUSICAL set in an opera homestead. Operas are sung throughout their entirety, at the same time as musicals use spoken communicate with songs jumbled at the same time. Edit: genuine operas will be in English. seem up Benjamin Britten. Phantom is not any more advantageous an opera than Cats is a nature documentary.

Phantom is a MUSICAL set in an opera house. Operas are sung throughout their entirety, while musicals use spoken dialogue with songs mixed in.

Edit: True operas CAN be in English. Look up Benjamin Britten. Phantom is no more an opera than Cats is a nature documentary.

It's an opera. Contrary to popular belief many operas have had a few spoken lines. "Tales of Hoffman" , "Carmen", "Madam Butterfly" etc.

You'll also know that the entire piece is set to music; that should give you another clue. It was billed as a musical to draw in a broader audience (the larger public tends to avoid an opera) and it had great commercial success. "Cat's" is not an opera; it lacks a dramatic plot; it is based on a collection of poems written by T.S. Elliot that is set to music and dance with no dramatic through-line. "Tommy" is also an opera. "Rent" could also be classified as an opera; but who cares what the dramatic form is; just enjoy the show.

    op·er·a 1 (pr-, pr)

    n.

    1. A theatrical presentation in which a dramatic performance is set to music.

    2. The score of such a work.

    3. A theater designed primarily for operas.

[Italian, work, opera, from Latin, work, service; see op- in Indo-European roots.]

Andrew Lloyd Webber stated that it was an opera marketed as a musical. Who do you believe; the composer or the forklift operator who blames his lack of artistic success on the economy?
