It may have to do with the position of the electrons. Because electrons are negatively charged, they want to get as far away as they can from each other. As a result, They fill in each orbital as single electrons first and then the rest is filled in after. They must have opposite spin states mainly because they are both negatively charged particles that try to get away from each other.
