School location dilemma?

I am in the process of opening a martial arts gym, found an ideal location with lots of open space, problem is their is a Karate school maybe less than a quarter mile away. I don't plan on teaching Karate but is it a good idea to open a school so close, ethically or profitability wise.

Update:

That is how I found the location, I looked up the demographics for the area, traffic and proximity to schools, the question was if it was ideal in terms of profit or ethics.

a good location is a good location. if that school is doing well then maybe it would be a good spot for you. I once asked a neighbor who owns several burger kings, how he chooses his location..his reply..mc Donald's always picks a good location!

There are more things to consider than just location here. What is the population within 10 miles? How good of a reputation does this current school have versus yours? What are your credentials versus theirs? It sounds to me like you need to do your homework first before opening a school. What will you teach and why would people come to you? Where is this going to be at State/City? There are many variables, not just ethics involved here that you must consider first.

First, in making your sign or other flyers and advertisements, check your spelling! You used the wrong word! It is "there" NOT "their". These things are important if you want to be professional and attract a thinking clientele, as you say you are opening a Martial Arts Gym, not merely a Karate class. You can open one as close as you want to that kind of place, as they usually attract children and merely uneducated consumers/devotees. Godd Luck!

competition is a good thing also people should have their choice perhaps they do not like your style of teaching perhaps the other focuses more on a different element of martial arts also having another school near means if you have a good relationship you can send students over for friendly sparring sessions to help them gain more experience with different opponents

so if you handle this right it could be mutually helpful
