How do I find residental building code online?
I am going to build an awning off of my back porch. I have been told by the city inspector (small town) that I have to hire a professional engineer to design the structure. Everyone else I have spoken to has told me that this is not the case. Even an engineer who is helping advise me. I am attempting to find the code which tells me the truth but am having trouble finding this information online. I believe that specifically I am looking for R802.5. Can anyone tell me how to find this information?

My state is based on the International Building Code.
Here, you don't need a drawing for a job less than a quarter million dollars in cost but you do need an engineer for anything that is not covered in the code book. The good thing is that almost everything is covered in the code book.

I've never seen anywhere where you can reference the entire building code, as it's a huge volume and copywritten material. I would check a forum like diychatroom and ask some of the experts there.
