Why does my kitten keep licking her protective cone after being spayed and declawed?

Okay, first, it's not cruel to both spay and declaw your kitten especially when she is a Calico [which have a very unique personality]

But, my kitten Boone keeps licking her cone that she wears to PROTECT her from tearing out her stitches that DO NOT dissolve. Also because she has stitches in her paws.

Anyways, she keeps licking her cone and I am afraid that she will make her tounge "raw" so to speak.

Is this a thing to make it seem like she is licking her paw or not?

She is about 5-6 months old and very cute and she is tooooo hyper to not have the cone.

EXAMPLE: After she was done using the litter box she had some of her business on her cone. So we had to take off the cone to clean it off. Well taking it off she went CRAZY and started licking her whole body.

We just got her spayed and declawed [10/08/10]

Thank you for reading and helping me with this problem.

By the way I am a teen so sorry if this is to immature or outspoken OR crazy for some of you guys.

Oh and Boone says hey! She's sitting with me :D

Because it's uncomfortable and probably because she's in horrible pain.

"Okay, first, it's not cruel to both spay and declaw your kitten especially when she is a Calico"

LOL! What in the hell does a cat's coat pattern have to do with ANYTHING? Calico ISN'T a breed and has nothing to do with a cat's personality. That is about one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here!

And yes - there's nothing wrong with spaying a cat but declawing is such an unnecessary, cruel and barbaric thing to do to a cat that's in outlawed in many countries.

Good luck with this cat. You've caused her so much pain and she'll probably be emotionally scarred for life. And since she can't use her claws to defend herself she'll most likely become a biter. But then hey - just dump her at a shelter like uncaring, horrible owners like yourself do all the time if that happens!

Shame on you. May bad karma come back at you tenfold for chopping off this kitten's toes!

basically be certain that he would not bounce down from places that are extreme. i actually are starting to be my 2 cats front declawed. They acted thoroughly prevalent together as they have been given homestead after. basically be certain the vet doing it incredibly is a sturdy vet. As to each and all the countless people who're against declawing, do you found out what quantity cats are kicked out on the line or taken to guard with the help of them clawing furnishings? thank you to many, declawing isn't that undesirable to be waiting to maintain your loved ones member. My cats have no themes of the muddle field or behavioral themes because of this. for my section it incredibly is larger useful to declaw than to place down or resign your cat to the already over populated shelters. Remind you I did attempt each and each and all the concepts previously declawing my cats. Like scratching posts and gentle paws, yet no longer something worked. I paid to have a behaviorlist come and help me, that still did no longer artwork. I waited 2 years previously I declawed them. I choose i'd desire to of carried out it swifter, it would desire to of saved quite some my furnature. additionally to the guy who pronounced that it incredibly is many circumstances declawed cats in shelters, the area is your suited strategies do you spot that? With each and all the shelters the area I stay there is infrequently declawed cats. i be attentive to those who're on a waiting record to undertake an already declawed cat.

She's licking the cone because she's in pain from the amputations you have done on her poor mutilated feet. She can't get to them, so the cone's all she's got. Think about it - how would *you* feel if the first joint of all of your toes were chopped off, and you had to walk around on your poor feet? That's what you've done to her. The cone won't hurt her tongue, and why would you worry about that after subjecting her to de-toeing? Seems you've got your priorities backwards.

What does being a calico have to do with it being 'not cruel' to declaw her? Does her coat color make her not be able to feel pain or something? Declawing is banned as animal cruelty in every civilized country in the world but the US and Canada. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) says that it should be a procedure of 'last resort'. The HSUS wants it banned - they see first hand all the cats that are turned into shelters due to the behavioral issues it causes. The world's largest registration body of pedigreed cats - CFA - feels so strongly against this horrific procedure that declawed cats cannot be shown.

Did you know that 30% of cats who've been declawed develop at least one behavioral issue? The most common ones are biting and refusal to use the litter box - ever after their paws are too painful to dig in the litter, so they choose to pee on the couch, or the rug. Other ones include lethargy, hiding - and even aggression.

This doesn't even address the physical complications. Bleeding and infection are common. So are bone chips - that makes their paws incredibly painful, and deformed claws that grow back.

As I said - her tongue is the least of your worries. What you should be worried about is that she's going to become one of those 30% and begin to bite, hide, or pee all over the house.

Source(s): many years of cat rescue (and seeing all the declawed cats that are euthanized at shelters because they bite or pee out of the box)

I'd tell your vet the itching is driving her crazy and see if there is something you can put on her coat to minimize the discomfort. Ask him for some tranquilizers. The itching will decrease each day.

Maybe you could compromise with her and let her lick her coat, but not her stitches. I promise you, her tongue will not get raw.

ETA: Please ignore the posters who believe declawing is cruel. I've known animals to go crazy licking their spay/neuter stitches and I have yet to hear of anyone condemning that procedure.

Neutering is not mean, but declawing is. It is super painful for the cat, and it even hurts them to use their litter box for a couple of weeks. Oh, your poor kitty.

She is hurting and wants to lick her pain away.

remember when you were a kid and got chickenpox? and your mother tapped oven mitts to your hands so youd stop scratching? but it only MADE IT WORSE! its the same concept. She CANT scratch(lick in her case) so she is licking the cone in an effort to trick herself into not itching. at least this is what my vet told me after my dog was neutered....
