There is a St. in front of Michaelmas if that clears the air so to speak.

I'm trying to remember something like that from Virginia but I'm suffering from brain constipation.

I'll edit if I sense any movement..

Size, height, etc would be helpful, but offhand I can think of three possibilities that might fit the bill, though naturally none of these are dark purple.

All of them come in darker shades as hybrid plants.

    1. Scabiosa lucida

    2. Stokesia (Stoke's Aster) There are a couple of hybrids that are purple, thought they are usually a bright blue in color. Bloom time is usually earlier than this as well.

This is Honeysong Purple (there is a darker one called Purple Parasols)

    3. Erigeron (There are several different species, ranging from white,

blue, pink and purple shades). This one is Erigeron glaucus

There are also other species of Aster (over 180 specific to North America) besides Aster nova-belgii (Michaelmas Daisy) -- several of them are purple in color and are found wild, could it be one of those? In particular, the New York Aster is a tall plant with flowers that tend to hybridize even in the wild and come in many shades, including deep purple.

Sorry I tried to imbed the photos, but it won't let me.

Believe you're referring to the aster. You see them growing wild along the roadside in the fall and you can also buy them at your local garden center in many colors ranging from blue, purple, white red and a wide range of pink.
