Is the King's Gambit a good King's pawn defense in chess?

I was looking it up and it has some pretty nice winning chances but a whole bunch of grandmasters including Bobby Fischer condemned it.

It all depends upon the level of play. There are many traps which would be losing against anyone of rating 1000+, but can win you a game in under 10 moves against many amateurs.

Grandmasters are looking only for keeping their one temp advantage as white, and abolishing it as black. Their competition level is so high that they just try to tie their games as black and ween out a small advantage (something positional, or material as little as one pawn) in order to win. In lower level chess, this is not at all an issue.

King's gambit has generally fallen on the wayside, but at lower levels it matters much less. You don't become a grandmaster by trying to play like one, you first have to play like what level you are (whatever that is).

It offers a lot of tactical opportunities for White but 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6!, as advocated by Fischer in his popular "A bust to the King's Gambit", definitely neutralizes most of White's winning chances. Look up King's Gambit, Fischer's Defense for more details.

Unbelievably, Fischer himself played the King's Gambit in later life and was quite successful. However, he played 3.Bc4 instead of 3.Nf3. This might be a sound alternative, retaining the initiative and applying pressure on f7.

Of course, it also depends upon your playing strength and the strength of your opponents..If you play against top-flight opposition, don't risk 3.Nf3. Otherwise, you could try it..

Fischer lost in a game against Spassky in Mar del Plata in 1960 he left in complete tears vowing to refute the Kings Gambit then he wrote an article in Chess Life and claimed the gambit was busted this despite the fact Bobby Fischer went on to play the Kings Gambit 3 times himself and won with it.

Should you play it? depends on your style if you're an aggressive player who isn't afraid to take some risks, likes to mix it up tactically with your opponents and attack go ahead as an occasional weapon its fine.
