What is the effect of using “sufficient pretext” as opposed to “good reason”?

At the end of the essay, Orwell writes, “…it gave me sufficient pretext for shooting the elephant.”

    A pretext is something you have made up - a good reason is an existing fact.

    sufficient pretext means you think you can get away with whatever it is you want to do. A good reason means you have ample justification in doing whatever it is you plan to do.
