In my own personal case, I was raised in a devoutly Christian household that denied the existence of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, vampires, werewolves, fairies, leprechauns and zombies, but was taught from the very beginning that God was absolutely, positively real. Religion was presented to me as if it were proven fact. I was taught to never, ever question the existence of God under any circumstance. Then I was sent to religious schools that reinforced the same basic notion. I was taught that I was absolutely not to question the existence of God, and that the only evidence I needed was the word of my parents and teachers. That may have something to do with it.

Actually people talk about the lack of evidence to support the Bible a lot, but there is a lot of evidence. I have read several books where people who seek to dethrone the Christian religion become Christians as they start to locate the evidence. If I can't prove to them that cigarettes should remain legal, without going off topic, then perhaps I should "shut up and sit down."
