Does my dog understand what im saying?

ive had my dog for almost 4 years ive had her since she was 3 months old, and i sometimes feel like she knows whats going on, i know she knows what her name is. i ask her if she wants food and her ears go straight up (shes a chihuahua) i tell her if she pooped in the house and she puts her ears down. how does she know shes getting in trouble? how does she know im talking to her when i dont even say her name? how can she understand?

Update:

oh and the weirdest thing is when me and my husband are having intercourse and its like she knows whats going on and leaves the room without us even telling her anything. dogs are so amazing!! i wish i could get into her head and see what she thinks.

BTW these answers are awesome i cant just pick one.

Sure, most dogs understand the basics --"fetch," "sit" and "stay." But if you have the motivation and patience, you will probably be able to teach your dog even more than 100 words. Stanley Coren, a psychologist who has performed a significant amount of research on the subject of dog intelligence, suggests that average trained dogs know about 160 words. Some dogs even show a vocabulary as vast as a human toddler's. Dogs also pick up on human gestures and cues better than other animals, even great apes. So dogs also read our body language and tone of voice.

It's the tone of voice you've used with each of those words. Obviously she associates food with good things and poop with something bad such as she's been yelled at or punished, what you perceive as guilt is nothing more than a negative association with that word.

Now I totally understand where you are coming from and I tell people that you cannot tell me my dog does not know what I'm saying. The other day I noticed she'd left her toy sheep in the bathroom, while in the bathroom I said, "Someone has left sheepy in the bathroom" in trots my dog (she was laying down on her bed) I said pick up sheepy, she grabs her toy and out she goes. Now I was impressed but I understand enough to know that she only responded to the word "Sheepy" she knows to associate that with her toy and so she came to me when I said Sheepy, when I said grab your toy she understands what that means.

If you use words and associate them with people or objects they learn to connect the two and the experience with each.

Dogs don't understand our language, but they do pick up on our tones and emotions. They also know that certain words (like food) bring certain desirable results...like getting to eat that food! Dogs also know our body language, for example if you're really excited about something, you're dog may pick up on this and start running around or barking excitedly. The same is true if you're not feeling well, your body language will indicate your lack of activity and lack of excitement.

Dogs are constantly assessing our body language because that's how they communicate with other dogs...it's their language!

No dog's do not understand anything you say to them but the commands you teach them. Also if you also say a certain phrase while feeding or taking outside they can learn that as well. If your dog did something and you scold after the fact your dog doesn't understand. She hears your tone of voice and that is what scares her. Your tone makes a BIG difference in how your dog reacts to you.

It's mostly tone of voice. When you offer her food, you'll use one tone, and the same when telling her off. She's learned to associate each one with a different experience.

I have cats, and they definitely understand the tone for food. OF course, you can't really tell a cat off.

Yes, i believe she does understand you. She understands commands and statements such as "bad dog". Dogs also understand when we say good girl or commands like sit, lay, jump, roll over, play dead, ect as long as we teach them. I may seem crazy but when i was a little girl, i had a german shepherd and i always used to just talk vent and tell stories to him and he would just sit there and listen... idk if he understood but i always thought he did. when i would cry he would rub his face against mine as if he was saying "its ok" and if i was mad he would move his paw up and down and sometimes put it on my hand like "calm down" but ya... Hope this helped!
