Americans teaching in Australia or New Zealand?
Are there any programmes that allow Americans to teach in Australia or New Zealand? Either in primary, secondary or language schools?
Yep, suppose I am different. Having lived in 7 countries and not having lived in the US for the past 9 years. If it helps, I've also acquired another citizenship.
Technically, yes, I could teach in public schools in the US, however, since I never have, I just have a cert of eligibility and not a license. To get a full license, I'd have to go back and teach.

Hi there
To teach in Australia the requirement is the completion of an undergraduate degree in any discipline for primary and secondary schools with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education which is a recognised teaching qualification.
The Overseas Qualifications Unit is based in each state of the country and for a fee will assess your degree against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Depending on where your degree was undertaken and by which institution it can be assessed and it can be determined if it is an equivalent to an Australian degree.
A post-assessment letter is sent out advising whether it is an equivalent or what course of further study is to be undertaken by you.
To be employed as a teacher in Australia you need to register with the institute responsible for that state. If you are interested in your chances of being able to teach here you can contact them first and see if they would be prepared to make an assessment based on your qualification, academic transcript, supporting referee letters of where you have taught.
There are TESOL vacancies available advertised by private training schools and colleges, but these tend to be part-time contractual arrangements. The other considerations that there has been a downturn in the number of international students coming to Australia which could impact on these types of positions.
I have included a couple of links that might be of use.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Mr Books

Don't listen to Mr J. Listen to the person above him.
I guess things are different here, the way we teach compared to Americans and the way we do everything. Like how we call each class a spell, how we get graded, how each year is called year 8, 9, 10 and so on. We teach different things.
We don't have anything against Americans and I reckon its pretty neat to have a teacher with a cool accent lol. At my school we pretty much have teachers from all over New Zealand and the world.
I've had a Canadian teach and an American teacher and there's been nothing wrong with them.
I actually have to say their pretty good at teaching because i've actually learn't something from them.
It doesn't matter what you are or where your from, its not like we will hate you.
We don't care if your an American and are teaching in New Zealand.

Are you a registered teacher in the states? If so you should be able to teach in NZ. If you have a bachelors degree you can do the graduate diploma (in nz), which is a year long and then you can teach here.
Google teach nz and education gazette.
EDIT- that guy is a complete jerk and has no idea what he's talking about. It looks like you'd be called a qualified teacher in NZ, but not a registered teacher. It takes 3 years to become registered. I'm not familiar with the whole process, but I know you are under the supervision of senior teacher. So probably a similar situation as the USA.
http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/rt/faq.stm check this website out, it's got all the info about becoming registered.
Actually this will have all the info you're after- http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/os/

Hey Naturegirl!!
I just thought of something... I know that you`re a TEFL teacher... but are you certified to teach in a school school, as well? I just remembered that, when I taught public school in the states, there was an exchange program for teachers which comprised several countries. I can`t remember what is was called but if you check with any public school in the USA, they should be able to tell you.
Ignore Mr. J... intelligent people may not LIKE what the US government has done but realize that there is a difference between INDIVIDUALS and a person`s government. I have actually had people accuse me to my face of being xenophobic, just because I`m an American... even though I was teaching abroad at the time!! These people didn`t even know me, to add insult to injury.
I am from a town called Melbourne, Florida, and when people ask me where I^m from, I say, ``Melbourne...`` and they assume I mean Melbourne, Australia. But... I`m not lying... I really am from Melbourne :)
I always get mistaken for Irish, which is good because I`m in Mexico and Mexico and Ireland are buddies (Ireland made some sacrifices for Mexico when they were at war with the US). HOwever, I have encountered NO hostility here and people make me feel really welcome even when they figure out where I`m really from!

Kiwis are stable people
they like knowing what they had today
they will have tomorrow
you come and go like the wind according to yourself (lived in 7 countries)
Kiwi kids expect a full education and dont want thier Teacher upping and off half way thru it all.
Maybe when you settle down come here---- otherwise please stay away.
And yes, we like a lot of other nationalities are fed up with the American attitude that everywhere NOT America is second rate.
There is NOTHING 2nd rate about us.

Oh yes, all Americans are evil. We all voted for Bush and/or Obama. We all suck. You guys on here that took the time to verbally attack and abuse people in a general fashion are disgusting. I wanted to teach in your country to learn more about the world. I am well-traveled, I have three teaching licenses, and a Masters degree in Education. I ve been teaching for 10 years. There are parents like you here in the U.S. who blame everything on other people instead of making changes themselves. I feel sorry for your children, I hope that I have them as students so that I can open their minds and assist them in eliminating the prejudices that they learned from their ignorant parents.

No doubt there is. But sorry to say but personally i wouldn't want an american teaching here.Your probably different or you could be the same but every yank i have met has been a typical self centered careless rude gung-ho american lacking ethics or respect for any other culture out there. And the amount of **** your government has caused in the world doesn't help either. The only decent americans are those who have traveled and claim to be canadian after realizing how much the world dislikes americans with a passion and for a reason especially in countries that have been more or less bullied by your government....inc NZ but hey do your job well and nobody will complain and the kids will love you. To be honest i think kiwi's are to laid back to really care where someone is from but as soon as you rave on about how great the usa is then they'd be slagging you off behind your back lol Anyway ignore the anti american rubbish, ive seen american in high school and mr turner was awsome, think he just applied like any other fella because he wasnt in the country long when he came along.
