there are two answers some people like
a) some like to say that that producing the initial product, the weak acid H2CO3, is enough driving force for for the reaction...
NaHCO3 & HCl --> H2CO3 & NaCl (aq)
b) others like to say making the final product of CO2 & H2O, is the driving force
(H2CO3 decomposes into CO2 & H2O)
NaHCO3 & HCl --> H2O & CO2 & NaCl (aq)
the driving force has always been to produce a more stable product
than what we start with.
push come to shove, i go with b.
