If you can obtain stem cells without an embryo than go for it. We have a problem with destroying a baby for research.

Some religions that are opposed to organ donation would be against this. To do the transplant, there needs to be a bone marrow/stem cell donor. Those who dont understand the difference between adult and embryonic are against it. And many religious hospitals shy away from cord blood even though its adult stem cells simply to avoid any association with embryonic.

Also remember they may not be speaking about opposition to stem cells, but the belief that aids is a punishment from god given to those who have broken his laws. I mean, thats why the entire epidemic was allowed to spread anyways - people who didnt think gays were worth treating, and that it must be their punsihment.

Actually, using that transplant to treat hiv is nothing new. The first person to be cured that way Im pretty sure was in the 90s, not 2007, but, ok.

The problem is that the donor needs to have a specific genetic mutation that is rare. Less than 2/3s of the people who need this transplant can get it because they dont have a matched donor. Finding a marrow donor is like winning the jack pot lottery. Finding a matching donor that has that specifc hiv resistant mutation is next to impossible.

The couple of times someone has been cured of hiv this way, it has been primarily accidental. In addition, they were ALSO leukemia patients, so they would have been going through the transplant anyways. Its also a VERY phenomonally expensive treatment, recovery is min of a year, and its VERY dangerous.

Its absolutely a huge step, but its not a cure.

Source(s): ... Have had the transplant for leukemia. The bone marrow transplant can treat like 95% of the diseases that are treated with adult stem cells. http://www.marrow.org/

i'm professional-existence too! I refuse to rigidity a girl to bare a baby if it potential she would be able to die interior the approach. As to the stem cellular quandary, some are even apposed to utilising the cells from an embryo that has spontaneously aborted, and specific that the scientific term for it. Why are they so against it? No rational reason is composed of innovations, yet wait till considered one of their toddlers are in decide for of this, and then ask them what they think of.

Most religious groups oppose embryonic stem cell research, such as the Catholic Church, but not somatic stem cell research. However, embryonic stem cells more readily differentiate into different tissue types meaning that they are better for stem cell research than somatic stem cells.
