What are ten things about the United Kingdom that most Americans need to know, but don't?

During the 1960s and 1970s, almost all Americans held the United Kingdom as symbolized by the Royal Family in high esteem, and the great and the good held up her cultural standards as the "gold" standard that Americans should emulate. About twenty years ago, however, cultrual arbitrators begin to consider Anglo culture as politically incorrect. What did I as an a middle-aged, middle-class, provincial American miss along the way? BTW, stay tuned for a similar question about American culture and what the British need to know about it.

Update:

P. S. Sorry about the typo in cultural.

Ah, Mary just what I expected from you. Of course, unless you have dual citizenship, you really shouldn't answer both questions. And yes, Queen Bee, I know the difference between asking questions about the UK and royalty.

I don't know that you missed anything. There are a few americans that do know about the U.K, I would however, emphasize "few".

That there is actually, a country (U.K) that consists of four states, not just England. Strange for a country that has 50 states and is not known just as Washington D.C. That there is history before u.s.a came into being. That history basically remains the same and doesn't change with each new film from Hollywood. That there is a subject that we know as geography that encompasses the whole world and not confined to certain areas within the borders of u.s.a. That in fact the Second World War did NOT start in 1941 but three years earlier. That diplomacy is an art, using language not weapons as a first resort. That heroes are real, not fictional comic book characters. There is more but, I am afraid that what I say, will only be expected of me by you.

That we are a very small country that has been around for a very long time. As far as culture goes we have some. We have a great sense of humour that got us through two world wars. We don't have to carry guns for protection, even the Police don't. We have buildings older than the US. American history is taught in schools, going by some questions posted here I doubt that British history is taught in American schools. Finally our flag is far better than yours and is flown in many countries.

As you have put it in Royalty...I am presuming things connected to royal......and I don't think ALL Americans don't know, it is more about 'believing' certain things as facts just because the media says it

The UK don't romanticise about the Royals, their way of life is nothing like the majority and was and still is politically incorrect.....which is possibly why you will find many 'normal' people will say they don' like royalty...it is nothing personal it is more about the 'royals attitude'.....

The vast majority of the UK, don't dislike royalty and the same goes..the vast majority don't love them......they are just there and are not of primary importance or daily/weekly even thought about

The vast majority of UK citizens are not related to royalty nor do they claim to be...same goes for Americans regardless of their copied uncited family trees...........if they were they would apply to Whos Who and be recognised as such officially....so to any that do claim it cite your 'Whos Who' and I will believe you, until then stop pretending to be something you are not.

'Family Crests' don't exist, a crest is only part of coat of arms families do not own coats of arms and having the same surname as an individual who has been awarded arms doesn't mean they have any rights to use their Coats of Arms.......it is bad taste at best and ignorance, attempting to steal because Americans have no Heraldry or laws/rules around it

That parts of the UK is more pro Royalist generally than other parts......namely Northern Ireland....even though many Americans think NI is ROI instead of two separate countries attached on the island of Ireland...so many Irish- Americans have no 'Irish' in their blood, but are British-Americans.

We speak the same language as in Queens English...but mean completely different things...so a Public school is a fee paying school..the Royals in the last few years are 'Publicly educated' ( prior to this home educated) most people in the UK are not publicly educated they are educated by local authority education in comprehensive schools ....can't see any royal ever going to a 'comp' except for a media set up visit.

American 'Royal watchers' and 'extreme US Royalists' don't understand that it is very normal in the UK to 'knock', 'condemn', take the opposing stand' just because we can......we do have a strange sense of humour........same goes the opposite way..knock the Royals and you are likely get a fight...as in they are OURS not yours......we don't 'want' them but no one else can have them...told you we are 'strange'

We are a small country with lots of varying views, now a multicultural county and rich in that culture, we don't separate ethnicity and stereotype like many US citizens do...eg Irish-Americans, in the UK you are Irish, or British and if you are born in the UK of African descent then you are British and it is thought of racist here to stereotype others (in the US way) and against the law....... some of the Royals certainly need to learn more about 'here' 'now' and forget ruling classes and their ignorant superior attitude of centuries ago.

Evie dear girl, pay no heed to the naysayers! You know dear girl, I personally blame that Benny Hill fellow for the fact that Americans no longer wish to emulate the British. You see, we gave you such wonderful televisual feasts as Upstairs Downstairs, The Forsyte Saga and Brideshead Revisited. It was through these programmes that the American people derived a sense of what it was like to live in Blighty. Then that scurrilous pervert Benny Hill arrived on the scene, chasing scantily-clad ladies around public parks and completely ruined everything. You know, it is a jolly good thing that he has expired - otherwise the 7th Earl of Lucan would be tracking him down with the intention of giving him a damn good hiding!
