Judo, Karate and Kendo are by far more popular as they are traditional Japanese martial arts.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become a possibility for those living in larger cities. In Japan it people interested in foreign martial arts or those interested in MMA are attracted to it.

The hate / like thing makes you sound 15. If I was 15 again I would definitely get into martial arts, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is an activity that cultivates discipline and overall health. It can be practiced by young and old alike. Good luck.

Not sure if they hate it that but I never saw anything about it while I was living there. On the other hand Aikido seems to be one of the most popular forms of martial arts.

Im sure that they would be proud of it being so successful (after all its a off shoot of Judo).
