I got a barbell, bench and some dumbbells - what's a good book that shows exercises?

    Strength Training Anatomy is an excellent book.

    No book is needed. My cousin is struggling with weight too and he found a great way. First if your addicted to alcohol or cigarettes - QUIT. Then you need to start a healthier diet. If i were you i would go to the gym every day and run on a treadmill for 20 minutes. If you dont like treadmillstry to Run or jog outside for 20 min around your block every day.
