    On a house:

    = x - 2/3x OR 1/3x

    On a boat:

    = 1/3x - 2/3(1/3x)

    = 1/3x - 2/9x

    = 3/9x - 2/9x OR 1/9x

    On the air balloon:

    = 1/9x - 2/3(1/9x)

    = 1/9x - 2/27x

    = 3/27x - 2/27x OR 1/27x

    His winnings:

    1/27x = 20,000

    x = 540,000

    Answer: 540,000 is what Mark won.

    Answer is 540,000

    He spent 2/3 on house = 360,000, Remaining=180,000

    He spent 2/3 of remaining 180,000 on boat = 120,000 Remaining 60,000

    He spent 2/3 of remaining on a air baloon = 40,000 Remaining 20,000

    Remaining 20,000 he spent on a car

    x = winnings

    house costs (2/3) x → (1/3) x remaining

    boat costs (2/3) remaining → (1/3)(1/3) x remaining

    air balloon cost (2/3) remaining → (1/3)(1/3)(1/3) x remaining = 20,000

    or (1/27) x = 20,000

    or x = 540,000

    Check:

    House = 360,000; Remaining = 180,000

    Boat = 120,000; Remaining = 60,000

    Balloon = 40,000; Remaining = 20,000

    Car = 20,000; Remaining = 0

    If he spent 20,000 on a car, and that was 1/3 of what he had left before he bought the balloon, then the balloon cost 40,000, and he had 60,000 left after buying the boat.

    If 60,000 is what he had left after buying the boat, then the boat cost 120,000, and he had 180,000 left after buying the house.

    If he had 180,000 left after buying the house, then he spent 360,000 on his house, so he had 540,000 to start with.

    Poor Mark. I hope they made him pay taxes on his winnings up front!

    If x is the initial money he had...

    x - 2/3x = 1/3x ---> after buying the house, he had 1/3x left

    1/3x - (2/3)(1/3)x = 1/9x -----> after buying the house, he had 1/9x left

    1/9x - (2/3)(1/9)x = 1/27x -----> after buying the balloon, he had 1/27x left

    If he is left with 20,000, then...

    1/27x = 20,000

    x= 540000
