    You mean like the cat?

    Apparently:

Once upon a time, the Jade Emperor thought it'd be better to assign an animal to each year so people could more easily remember the Zodiac cycle. So he decided to hold a meeting with all the animals and he would choose 12 of them to be the Zodiac animals. At that time, cat and rat were close friends. They were very excited about the meeting and decided to go early. However, cat was a sleepyhead. He hardly ever woke up before noon. On the night before the meeting, he asked rat to wake him early the next morning. When morning came, rat got up early and quietly left for the meeting alone. When cat finally woke up in afternoon, he knew it was too late. Feeling betrayed, he vowed that henceforth rat would be his enemy. So that’s also why cats are always chasing after rats.

Another folk story tells that cat and rat were the worst swimmers in the animal kingdom. Although they were poor swimmers, they were both quite intelligent. To get to the meeting called by the Jade Emperor, they had to cross a river to reach the meeting place. The Jade Emperor had also decreed that the years on the calendar would be named for each animal as they arrived to the meeting. Cat and rat decided that the best and fastest way to cross the river was to hop on the back of ox. Ox, being naïve and good-natured, agreed to carry them both across. Midway across the river, rat pushed cat into the water. Then as ox neared the other side of the river, rat jumped ahead and reached the shore first. So he claimed first place in the competition and the zodiac.

1994: Dog People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature. They have a deep sense of loyalty, are honest, and inspire other people¡¦s confidence because they know how to keep secrets. But Dog People are somewhat selfish, terribly stubborn, and eccentric. They care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money. They can be cold emotionally and sometimes distant at parties. They can find fault with many things and are noted for their sharp tongues. Dog people make good leaders. They are compatible with those born in the Years of the Horse, Tiger, and Rabbit soooo true! well, i care a lot about money & i'm never distant at parties [hell, i hog the spotlight] but everything else is true. same with the 2nd definition except that i'm not private. "people are either my friend or my enemy, there's no in between" who knew an internet site can describe me so well?

The Okapi. The committee got sick of everyone saying, "The O-what?!"

Seriously though, who wants to look up their year of birth and claim to be a stumpy giraffe with stripes? Pfft!

The platypus..when they have bad hair days they are mocked and called the rattiapus...A member of the committee saw one get run over and heard it called a flattypus...many, many reasons not to choose the beaver-like platypus..

I beg to differ with Amy. Actually, the Jade Emporer had homoerotic tendencies, which is he included the cawk and not the kitty.
