Why is Manny Pacquiao accused of taking steroids but the ageless Bernard Hopkins is not?

Now hear me out, I'm a fan of both men and I think they are both clean fighters as well. But what I can't understand is why people constantly accused a 32 year old man in his prime of juicing when there is a 46 year old guy beating up on young men in their primes? This was bought to my attention by a certain Michael Marley of Boxing scene.com here is the link http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=34251 I want to know guys why is B-hop praised but Pacquiao accused of cheating? What's your take?

Update:

@ Sirvon1st I don't know I also heard he agreed to taking a blood test after the fight, Can a steroid fade away directly after the fight?

Update 2:

@ Sirvon1st c'mon just answer the question. If a fighter juices before a fight and takes a blood test directly after the fight can he past that test undetected?

Update 3:

@ Sirvon 1st that's all I wanted bro. No offense?

Update 4:

@ DT good answer :-)

@ Norman Bates I agree somewhat.

Update 5:

@ DT Time to have an intelligent debate my friend! Floyd Mayweather started his Golden gloves armature career at sixteen he won the 106 pound championship, next he moved up to 122 and won another championship, the next year he moved up to 130 and won once again then went to the Olympics at 135 and started his pro career @ 130 just two years later at 18. Now That's a 30 pound difference in just two years. Were as Pacquiao weighed 143 in his last fight with Morales, 144 in his second fights Marquez and Barrera, 147 in his fight with Diaz, 148 with ODLH and 149 in his last couple of fights against Hatton, Cotto, Clottey and Margarito. That's a four pound difference in just 4 years! Now what's your take on that?

Update 6:

@DT Pacquiao started his pro career a 15 year old 106 pounder, now he is a 32 year old 145 pounder. Can't agree that over a 14 year long career gaining a measly 40 pounds is normal? As I said Mayweather gained 30 pounds in just two years, but of course he can't be on the juice because of the stern drug testing they have in the Golden Gloves. DT I'm fourteen last time I went to the doctor(two months ago) I weighed 115 pounds now I weigh 128! You don't think I'm juicing do you? Also when Fashan 3k Battery KO'd Manny he had weighed in at 122 for a 112 title fight! He had to loss all of that weight in just a couple of hours, so yeah a body shot knocked him out. Manny then went up to 118 then 122 and got a belt then 126 and beat Barrera then 130, 135, 147, 140, 147 again then 154( which he only weighed 145) When Floyd was the same age has Manny he was in the golden gloves he went from 106, 122, 130, then went to the Olympics at 135, went back to 130 to start his pro career, went to 135,140,

Great question bro. I am going to, for the first time, give my full opinion on this whole Pacquiao situation. I know you are a Pacquiao fan, but you are much more intelligent than regular Pacfans, and therefore I think you will be able to respect my views and won't dislike me afterwards.

To start off, I am not going to lie, I think Pacquiao is on steroids. Let me explain why. He started off as an extremely thin teenager Flyweight getting KOed by body shots against nobodies. He then, in a short period of time, became a 8 division champion who is dominating Light-Middleweights. There is not way any fighter can achieve that without some help from various substances. He is also MUCH bigger physically than he was just a few years ago. Especially when you compare to how he looked when he was a teenager to nowadays. That is certainly not how his body would naturally develop, even with training.

The argument some people put forward of "Carlos Monzon got KOed early in his career then came back to be an ATG" is not a valid when in this case. Monzon did have losses early in his career, like Pacquiao. However, he wasn't being KOed by body shots by nobodies, and he stayed at Middleweight, he didn't move up like 9 divisions, and continually dominate.

Another reason I believe he is on steroids is because of hm refusing to take a simple blood test, where they draw VERY LITTLE blood. Even when offered 40 MILLION, he refused. Now you can look at that in whatever way you wish, but that is a VERY suspicious move on Pacquiao's part. Why would you refuse for that amount of money? You can't be scared of needles if you have tattoos. You can't use the excuse that it drains your strength as a fighter. Pacquiao's excuse of it is why he lost to Morales is not valid either. There is no scientific proof that it does anything to harm a human physically. Also, his loss to Morales was long ago and he had improved as a fighter, so why should he be scared?

Also, the argument of "Then why aren't other great weight jumpers accused of being on steroids?" is not a valid one. Armstrong, Duran, Leonard, Hearns etc did NOT dominate 8 WEIGHT CLASSES above their original weight class

Basically, it is not humanly possible to be skinny teenager being KOed by Flyweight nobodies by body shots, and then go on to be an 8 division champ dominating Light-Middleweights. That is not possible without help from some type of PED. It is hard for many Filipinos and Pacfans to swallow, but that is the truth.

Please don't take my opinion too seriously. Rather give constructive feedback, as you are, as I said, more intelligent than regular Pacfans.

    EDIT:

    @who would win

You chose the 4 years where Floyd made the biggest weight jump and the 4 years where Manny made the smallest weight jump. Also, Floyd actually looks like he grew naturally, Pacquaio does not.

Also, we are talking about their pro careers. Manny started his pro career at 106 and fought Margarito at 145. That is a (basically) 40 lbs difference. Floyd on the other hand started at 131 and fought DLH at 150. That is a 19lbs difference. What about that?

Also, Floyd had 11 years to grow into that 19lbs. Manny had only 4 years more to grow in 40LBS! That does not make sense.

Mainly because of the way he's winning, you don't see Bernard Hopkins moving up and knocking out Vitali Klitchsko and then a few months later moving down and battering Steve Cunningham, keeping all his speed and power from his previous weight classes.

Lets not forget, nobody expected Bernard Hopkins to go into Canada and look as impressive as he did, so for this writer to act like Hopkins accomplishments should be questioned is almost like making your point after the fact.

Prior to beating Jean Pascal......Bernard Hopkins hadn't looked impressive in nearly two years dating back to his fight with Kelly Pavlik so theirs noting extraordinary about that. Even some of the people at Golden Boy were questing if he should still be fighting but now all of a sudden he looks good after two or three years of bad showing and he's a suspect for steroids.........Ok, I guess.

  • The reason is simple - B-Hop lives, eats, drinks, breathes, and sleeps boxing. He is also a vegan, avoids putting any sort of garbage in his body and trains obsessively. He is probably the hardest worker in all of boxing, which explains why, even though he is past his prime, he can still fight. Hopkins doesn't have the physique of a steroid user, plus you never hear of nagging injuries the way you would a steroid user.

People who claim that Pacquiao in on roids say this because Pacquiao has been able to keep his speed moving all the way up from 106 pounds. I personally do nto believe (and never have, actually) that Pacquiao 'roids up, just like B-Hop, he got to where he is through hard work.

well, for me, i can't add anything else to what DT said, but yeah, manny's weird answers in negotiations for their first fight is what did it for me. if manny had said 'i will take a steroid test in the ring on the day of the fight and still knock you out", that's one thing, but the second he started giving weird, conflicting answers, i got suspicious. my filipino girlfriend always says that there are people telling manny what to say and do, and that he might have become confused about something, who knows? i think teddy atlas is convinced he's on something, and i also read on eastside boxing that there is really only one man in the history of boxing who's punch rate has drastically increased as he has gotten OLDER, and that's manny pacquiao. and one of the few things that steroids could do for a fighter is just that! i saw manny stumble across the ring trying to ward off punches by fellow midget juan manuel marquez, now he looks like he could get in their with the klitschko brothers!

Jon, some of your examples are dubious, (i say that with all due respect) we are in an entirely different era. armstrong and even duran did not have access to the stuff that's available today. as for any accusations, well, these athletes are big boys who are well paid. comes with the territory. heck, look at the searches average americans have to go through at airports? they don't have any "reasonable suspicion" to look through all our packages and x-ray us, do they? and they certainly don't offer us 40 million dollars to do so...and finally, PED means "performance enhancing drugs', that could be a number of things, not just steroids.

also, Jon, my girlfriend is born and raised in quezon city and speaks two dialects of tagalog. if she read "The Philippines has a deep moraled culture that values integrity and justice." she likely would spit her green tea out. all these stories she tells me about the frustration, corruption, and hypocracy that goes on over there, is she a liar? her mom owns some businesses over there and when my girlfriend went to the PI to check on them, they were a complete mess and her own relatives that completely ruined them and lied about it.! what about all the bribery that she talks about? why does she tell me that many people over there are "guilty until proven innocent" and she told me about a story of a dude who is in prison there for something even though there is video evidence of him being somewhere else at the time of the crime, and they won't let him out. why does she always tell me the laws are jacked up over there? why does she say police are idiots there and can't be trusted, and have little education and can be bought off? oh, and it's not just her, so don't say my girlfriend hates her own people. i have co workers who say the same thing, and one of my best friends is a pinoy who expresses the very same frustrations.

They only accuse who they want to accuse. Discrimination in the highest degree. Anybody who believed that there is no discrimination and profiling in the US is either blind or a prejudice himself. Accusing a fighter for mere speculation just because of the success the said fighter is having is a clear testament of discrimination. If you cannot beat them, accuse them to somehow take away their credibility on their achievement. These is not the first time this happen in sport where the US is involved.

Just imagine if Manny Pacquiao was an American, he will be adored coast to coast and defended in everything he does more than they defended the wrong doing of one fighter whose behavior is beyond satisfaction.

Because Pacquiao refused to accept fully random Olympic style drug testing without any cutoff dates for a $40+ million dollar payday & chose to fight Joshua Clottey instead, & Bernard Hopkins didn't.

Who would refuse to fight someone for a guaranteed $40mil over drug testing issues unless there's something to hide? Floyd went on to earn $40 million for fighting Mosley. Pacquiao still haven't earned $40 million this year ($12mil vs Clottey & $25mil vs Margarito = 37 in two fights). That doesn't make sense to me and others that think like me.

@asker - Fully random drug testing means fully random drug testing, not let's stop a week ahead of the fight, & continue after the fight. If there's nothing to hide what's the problem? Thousands upon thousands of Olympic athletes endure the same testing without incident.

There's more to enhancing a athletes performance than just drugs. For example there's blood spinning which increases the oxygen in a athlete which enables them to perform better by increasing endurance. WADA & USADA know how to check for anything abnormal. Blood spinng can also wash impurities i.e. PED's out of a athletes system allowing them to pass regular drug tests. Once again, if there's nothing to hide why refuse $40million dollar testing?

Mayweather/Mosley had fully random drug testing. They stopped blood testing 18 days out, but urine testing continued right up to the fight. Why refuse that?

    - I thought I clearly answered your question. But I'll make it clearer for you. A athlete can use PED's a week before the fight, then spin their blood to make it clean & pass any test after the fight.

    - Like DT said, your one of the more intelligent Pac fans. No offense taken.

Bernard Hopkins is a great athlete and I know he is a clean fighter just like Pacquaio. He is not put into question as a steroid user because people still believe in his skills and talent. As long as there are no facts or even close to facts that vaguely directs them to steroid abuse, then they are innocent until proven guilty. I believe in righteousness, professionalism, civility, respect, I education, and justice. Accusing someone directly because of mere assumptions or personal grudge is utterly inhumane, self-seeking and prejudice. This is what Mayweather clan have done to Pacquaio.

I wonder why Armstrong is not criticized for his accomplishments in going up and down the weight class in a span of over 40 pounds and winning titles and KOing bigger fighters. Why didn’t Georges Carpientier who fought at flyweight then end up becoming a Heavyweight not scrutinized as well when he has knocked out guys way bigger than him? What about Roberto Duran who gained BY FAR more weight than Pacquaio from Lightweight to Super Middleweight and scoring spectacular victories. I respect these boxers and I refuse to ruin their name in the spirit of any jealousy, suspicion, support of my favorite fighter that they have threatened, or simply because in my belief, any civilized and educated person should know the difference between what is righteous and justice against what is prejudice and immoral.

Yes we live in a society with flaws, but there are rules. It is illegal for any human being in a democratic country to make false accusations in public without any facts. It does not mean just because Pacquaio refuse to abide by Mayweather’s rules of using USADA (A PRIVATE organization with no affiliation to the Nevada Athletic Commission or any state regulated athletic commissions)that he is automatically on steroids and we must all be suspicious of him because he should 100 Percent follow Mayweather’s new rules. If he doesn’t agree on Mayweather’s demand 100% then he must be on steroids. When Mayweather changed his stance to 14 day cut off, then Pacquaio now agrees, then why did Mayweather went back to full random blood testing? Why didn’t Mayweather try to negotiate a fight with Manny even before he got in trouble with the law?

In any society dictated by a social order, it is not what you know, what you think, or what you assume; it is what you can prove. If you can’t prove anything, then that is a LEGAL definition of a LIE. The Philippines has a deep moraled culture that values integrity and justice. No Filipino athlete in any international doping cases has been caught using steroids. NOT ONE. The Philippines is a proud conservative country. If any person understands Filipino culture, Pacquaio would be completely dishonored, shamed, and humiliated if Filipinos ever catch him cheating because again, in over 100 years of Filipino participation in any international sports, no Filipino has ever tested positive for steroids or have been investigated for drug abuse. That’s a fact.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_...

With all due respect, I don’t care about Pacquiao or Floyd fans. They have minimal impact on whether I love or hate Pacquaio or Mayweather. I control my own psychology, my own mind. None of them generally represent my current country USA or my previous country, the Philippines. I stick with facts more than assumptions. I never called Mayweather a ducker, coward, or gay. I never accused him of anything that I cannot prove or show any links. Pacquaio never tested positive for steroids, has never been in any form of investigation of steroid abuse, have never been called upon by the NSAC, has never had any history of steroid background, and has never been given any warrants by any officiating committees for cheating.

I have been here for quite some time in Yahoo Answers. And base on my own observations, almost all of the accusations on Pacquaio being on steroids are coming from Mayweather fans or a fan that has a personal grudge on Pacquaio or have been a huge critic throughout. I once asked a question on neutral contributors who rarely got into the Pacquaio and Mayweather debate if they think Manny is on steroids, an overwhelming majority thinks he is NOT, people like celticbrawler, mrraraavis, blogbaba2, toughguy2, Peter H, Mark W, Jose Martinez, Woody, billboxing, brickfist, Cathee, Andrew 024 (Lissa’s Husband), Jeff Murdoch, Woody, John S, and many more all thinks Pacquaio is not on steroids. Indeed, if you notice, those who accuse Pacquaio or have “suspicions” of him are and will always be Mayweather fans in this forum. Now why is that the main trend? I wonder.. Why can’t someone like toughguy or blogbaba who have been watching boxing before many of us have been born don’t accuse Pacquaio of steroids? Why is it only Mayweather fans or Pacquaio’s original critics? I meant no disrespect to anyone.

God bless all and I wish everyone a Happy New year :-)

Source(s): Hello to you and hello to everyone. I am truly impressed with the show of reverence and respect from both sides on this issue. I take nothing personal, just a gracious, forthcoming, professional, and mature debate. :-) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvEbK...
