How do I download ebooks from amazon/barnes&noble for KOBO (borders)?

I was told when i purchased my kobo I could purchase books from any of the major retailers and sync them with my kobo. Does anyone know how i can do this/ Do i need another software or something. I have downloaded a few free books from barnes and noble but I cannot figure out how to move them into the kobo. I have figured out how to use the kobo site effectively however I just dont find it as user friendly as amazon.

please help

    My daughter got a Kobo also. She has Amazon gift cards, I chatted with an Amazon Rep and he told me their ebooks are only for the kindle. You may want to check out the library. Ours has a nice size list of ebooks
