Immigration as a positive?

Many people say immigration is a bad thing, that we are receiving too many people etc. But the way i see it, immigration would have to be the ultimate example of the superiority of Western civilisation. Just going for a walk and seeing indian, vietnamese, filipino shops to me is just brillant and proof of the absolute rat holes of these countries. Is there no other race or culture that can boast the superiority of Western countries such as U.S, Canada, Germany, Britain and Australia? Is it immigration not proof that Western civilisation has a 'burden' to civilise the rest of the world? Is it not proof of our destiny to rule the world?

Update:

I say 'Rule the world' because well are we not giving money anyway in foreign aid? How much money is the U.S spending in Iraq and Afghanistan? How much money do we give yearly to countries such as the Philippines? Its never just a one off foreign aid package but every damn year. Now if we have been giving foreign aid for the last 20 years its obvious foreign aid isnt working. Wouldnt it be just cheaper for taxpayers if we just went in and occupied the country? Its obvious from how much foreign aid we are spending that these people are not capable of looking after themselves because of the corruption there.

You make a very convincing point. At the university I am currently attending, it's common to find that 30% or more of each class consists of foreigners who have come to the West for education, and often times, these students stay to find employment. This kind of behavior makes me proud of my country.

While this "brain drain" may be a problem for the foreign countries, it provides them an opportunity to discover the flaws within their system and remain competitive to the West.

I like the way you think, Big B (except for that "rule the world" part). I believe people should be less afraid of immigrants' countries of origin, and more concerned with the deterioration of the values that made this country so attractive, like those expressed in the Constitution. Now, I'm not speaking to the illegal immigration problem, but only the diversity of the people living here. There are those who believe we benefit from the free flow of immigrants, and they have compelling arguments. But I would certainly like to see people entering this country with basic skills in english, and basic knowledge of the Constitution. Then, again, I believe that immigrant's grandchildren are up to speed in these areas, at least as much as the natives. I'm with you when it comes to valuing our diversity - a truly wonderful thing - as long as we all agree we are free to pursue happiness in so far as it doesn't infringe on other's right to do so.

Positive is a very subjective word... positive in what sense? positive economically? Socially? as a means of spreading the empire of the united states? it would help if you define in what sense our looking for, but overall as the saying goes "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" People wanting to immigrate to your country obviously shows that there is something they desire out of living in your country, but this doesn't necessarily imply that it is beneficial for everyone.

As for your statement that people wanting to immigrate here as proof of "burden to civilize" these people, well yes it could be ASSUMED that we have more culture and assume that people are immigrating because of our culture, but its definitely not proven.

Regarding your statement that it is our destiny to rule the world. isn't that a little neo-nazi mixed with the white mans burden?

Personally I think government is more effective when more power is given to small localized informed centers of communities, and all empires are bound to fail because they are the opposite.

Countries thrive because of immigration, and nothing the conservatives of the world say or do will change that. I find it absurd that they are against immigration. It's a good thing [immigration].

America was at it's peak after WWII to the 80's for a reason.

Some is good.... There are just too many though.
