Where can I find out about percentiles?

My daughter is 5 weeks old, and at a recent appointment her doctor mentioned that she was in the 25th percentile for height, the 50th percentile for weight, and the 50th percentile for head size.

I'm pretty sure I understand what that all means (she's taller than 25% of babies, heavier than 50% and has a bigger head than 50%) but is there any more to it?

Nope, that's pretty much all there is to it. Unless you want to look into the details of the sampling methods used. (For instance, the weight centiles are based on formula fed babies - that's why they don't show the dip in weight right after birth as breastfeeding gets established).

This is how it was explained to me...

50% is average baby. Anything under 50 is below average or on the smaller side. Anything above 50 is above average or on the bigger side. My daughter is on 20th % for weight and 40th for height. There's just no way my baby is bigger than 20% of all babies cuz she's tiny!! She's almost 4 months and she weighs a lil over 11lbs and still wears 0-3month clothing.

When you have your next check up ask your babys doc to explain this to you.

I hope this heped you a lil.
