Nikon D100 vs Nikon D40/D40x which is better and questions about prices...?
Ok, so right now I own a Nikon D100, I love it but I got my hands on a Nikon D40 and I fell in love with it. My only thing is I'm getting mixed reviews on which camera really is higher quality. D100 is older and I adore the in camera retouch features of the D40/D40x. Also, price ranges, if I were to sell my D100 just the camera body how much would you suggest I sell it for? Or if I sell it with my lens, a VR AF-S 18-55mm, how much would you suggest to sell it for? Would it be better to try to sell it on Ebay or are there Nikon stores that I can actually sell it to? I know it's a lot of questions but I don't want to make this decision without the proper knowledge and any help is MUCH appreciated! Thanks :)

If you love the in-camera retouch features, then opt for D60. It now sells for almost the same price as D40/D40x and has better image processing.
Jens has a point there that your D100 is overall a better body then what you want. If you really want to upgrade then opt for something newer like D300s which will be suited for your use (after a D100).

Believe it or not, the D40 is a bit of a setup down from the D100 in some ways. One significant issue may be whether or not the D40 will provide autofocus on your older lenses. The D100 has the ability to drive AF/AF-D lenses because of a built-in AF motor which new, entry-level Nikon's lack. A better options might be a used D50, D70/D70s or D80. You also didn't specify what currency for your budget. 300 (Pounds Sterling) is very different from 300 (US Dollars) or 300 (Euros).

The D40 is a fine camera and stands out even today with its flash sync speed of 1/500s; back in its time it also did exceptionally well in high iso situations. It has been long since discontinued though, meanwhile you can get the successor of its successor (the D3100, that is).
But in terms of quality, you'd be trading a former upper prosumer level camera for a newer lower entry level one, the cheapest in Nikon's entire lineup at its time. For current prices of these cameras, i cannot really give any educated advice. Just check out finished transactions on ebay and see what they usually sell for.

I would consider Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera
* 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor
* 5.8x AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens included
* D-Movie Mode; Cinematic 24fps HD with sound
* 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot color LCD monitor
* Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards
