When installing ram are their any requirements?

When installing ram is there any requirements the motherboard have to have to be able to use it? like i want to install a DDR3 RAM but some computers have memory standards of DDR2 and other stuff. Would it work if i installed DDR3 ram if a computer has a memory standard of DDR2?

Also if im installing 1GB RAM into a computer with 500MB of RAM should i take the 500MB out if i dont have too because there's still slots left. By the way im installing this into a desktop.

ddr2 will not work in ddr3 slots and visa verse. the slots are psychically different and you wont be able to get the ram in. and if you have 512 in one machine and you buy a gig stick you can leave the original ram in there. more is better!

There are boards that will run DDR2 or DDR3. Not in the same slots though, usually limited to only 2 memory slots per flavor and one or the other, not running both kinds at the same time. A example is the LGA 775 board of Asus, P5G41-C-LX, capable of 4GB per slot. Introduced in 2001, and still survives today. You also have to know how much capacity you computer can handle. This should be done before your purchase. Example would be 2GB, 4GB etc. Hope it helps.

Go to the following link, http://www.crucial.com/ they can do an on line check which will determine which ram your motherboard supports. They will recommend the optimum amount. You can order on line and although they are not the cheapest it is worth paying for good ram. They guarantee compatibility with your motherboard and give an excellent warranty. They also give fitting instructions. I have used them many times and always been satisfied. Hope this helps.

It works best if the ram is all of the same type and speed and in pairs. But I would not drop 500mb of ram just because it wasn't and exact match if I could help it.

There is a site [http://www.crucial.com/] that will scan your pc and tell you what ram they recommend and where you can buy it .
