Good idea? Bad idea? ~or~ Is she ready for a fishing trip?

Ok, so I've been thinking, Boo's two and a half, and I know it's about time to get her out somewhere with a little pole (or a hand line) and some bread balls or bits of shrimp for bluegill or sailor's choice. Any tips or hints from those of you who have been here before? Should I wait a little longer or is it time? Should I go for bluegill so there's little to no chance of her getting a surprise sea trout from out of nowhere like has happened to me with a hand line? Whaddya think folks?

Update:

LMAO

Kat, who invited you into the fishing section? (and why haven't you called me back? I left you a "tag you're it" message the other day when you called... my cell's being stupid, call the house phone.

Oh, topic... you know as well as I do that Wyatt would make better bait... he's more buoyant (and more of a pest) ; )

I know what you mean. I started my kids when they were 2 years old. nothing big, just gave 'em a net and let them play with the minnows. My goal was to just introduce them to the water and all the little things in the shallows. When I was with them, I'd use light line and small hooks so that I'd purposely catch pinfish and any other small fish in the area. I would act like I caught a huge whale and ask them to help Daddy. I would let them reel in the fish while I held the rod. After a few high 5's and toothless smiles ( kodak moments) we'd do it all over again. The trip would last about an hour and a half so ya gotta work quick. I miss those days, now they're older and meaner and won't let me sleep. " Daddy, wake up, it's time to go fishing!!" DUDE! It's 2 a.m., not even the fish are awake...okay...wake me up in 10 minutes. My girls went off to better things like; malls, music stores and boys. I still remember their first "big" catch. Gimme, take a camera, keep it as simple as you can and just enjoy that moment. It doesn't last long.~good luck catchin'

I dont have kids but I have taught people how to fish for the first time, including relatives. The young ones might not develop an interest for fishing at first, but over time they will. They usually develop interest in a few months on average. The most difficult kids I taught either were impatient, annoying, or they were too scared to touch the fish. I also make them plan out the fishing trip and get their gear together, sometimes catch bait, if they dont they cant go.Also I noticed that the less help you give them and more time you allow them to figure things out they seem to be more interested.About targeting the easy species, that might work, but I noticed the more I taught them or the more I exposed them to the various of fish you can catch they seem to be more interested. Another thing that works is by catching the interesting fish like sharks in front of them, that seems to get them into it.

Only one way to find out... Take her :) Id plan somewhere close to home. Bluegills sound like an excellent target.

I end at regrettably my father did no longer make it. you have human beings being overwhelmed with marvel and grief and you describe it like a climate record. This tale desires some serious boom.

  • If you are planning to use her as bait, then she is just the right size!!!

    Hee, hee, hee!!!
