What is the best DSLR camera for an inexperianced user?
I used to have a canon SLR but i haven't kept up on the new tech and I'd like to get back into it without going broke. I'd like to do good macros and good general photography like pet portraits.
Sorry about the spelling.

Get an entry level Canon, Nikon, Pentax or Sony DSLR that will cost (new) around 400GBP or 550 US dollars
If your budget is more limited then a good used DSLR from the same manufacturers will be around half to 2 thirds the coat of new.

Do you want to shoot video as well?
No video: Canon XS or XSi
Video: Canon T1i or T2i
Every DSLR is good for macro as long as you buy a macro lens.

I would consider Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera
* 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor;
* DIGIC 4 image processor for high image quality and speed
* ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12800) for shooting from bright to dim light;
* enhanced 63-zone, Dual-layer metering system
* Improved EOS Movie mode with manual exposure control and expanded recording 1920 x 1080 (Full HD)
* Wide 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor;
* Dedicated Live View/Movie shooting button
* New compatibility with SDXC memory cards,
* Plus new menu status indicator for Eye-Fi support

Top 2 brands: Nikon and Canon. when spending this much $, don't settle for any other brand. Canon XS is Canons entry level camera. Got it for Christmas and love it. idk about Nikon.
