Normally in a sleep study they are looking for anything that could cause sleep abnormalities. They attach wires to your head, arms, trunk, and legs. They monitor your brain waves. They have a camera and a microphone in the room. They are recording your muscle movements. They are checking for sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and within your brain waves how much restorative sleep you get. A sleep specialist then reviews all this information and determines what if anything is compromising your quality of sleep and what they can do about it.

I used to do sleep studies. They will attach some wires but it isn't as bad as it sounds. It's just kind of awkward. Then they will monitor your sleep electronically to see if your breathing slows down (hypopnea) or if you quit breathing altogether (apnea) long enough to disturb your sleep. There are other things they rule out, but it isn't bad. After all, how many tests do you get to sleep through? Good luck.
