When does Mass Effect get good?
So far, it's pretty meh. Nothing has really hooked me in. I could stop playing now and never care to pick it up again. Now, admittedly, I'm still in the beginning, but there's a problem when the side stuff is more fun than the main story (I have this same complaint for Fable's II & III). I'm on Noveria, and haven't done the "Feros: Geth Attack" or "Find Liara T'Soni" mission's. Can someone tells me when I get to the part that makes this game get such acclaim?
I heard the beginning was kind of boring but that it picked up, so I'm really just asking for that point. Not interested in spending money (this was a gift). And I like it, just not crazy about it. It's better than Lost Planet.
It's like... It's like you're the worlds most sophisticated spam bot... I mean, it was even relevant to the subject of this question. Shame it completely missed the part where I said I was already playing the game. Which reasonably implies that I already own it. And don't want to pay $40 for a game that costs $20 at GameStop.

The story gets really interesting when you reach the planet Virmire. The storyline for the entire trilogy starts near the end of the mission. I understand many people think the game is somewhat boring. In that case, struggle through the game and then play Mass Effect 2, which is more intense and action oriented.

It depends on how fast you want to get started on ME3. I personally would recommend playing ME1 and ME2 straight through so that you remain the true architect of the storyline, but we're talking sixty game hours per title if you do all of the side missions and whatnot. If you want to get straight to ME3, then just play ME2, but bear in mind that the default decisions in ME2 will all be "renegade" choices. If you want to start off with "paragon" choices in ME2, you will have to purchase and download the ME: Genesis tool: a 15 minute interactive prologue that allows you to "tailor" the key decisions from ME1 to your tastes without you having to play ME1 and structures the ME2 plot accordingly.
