How do I open the trunk of my 1996 VW Jetta Trek?
It won't open with the ignition key (the only key the previous owner gave me) and I can't find the latch release if there is one. I don't have an owner manual.

The trunk release is in the center console under the door in the back of console.
Open the door and you will see a square button. Push it. Trunk should release if it is working properly.

So i may be the two pressing down on the lid or lifting up whilst I keyed it. the actuality it opened, closed and locked completely(you of course then tried to open it today back i'm hoping) otherwise your assessment to the surely injury is incorrect. presently it won't artwork, so some thing befell after the twist of destiny. You the two have been given a 2d bang, or somebody gave it a boot because of fact it replace into broken, or somebody filled an elephant in the trunk. can't particularly say. that's what the mechanic is gonna try first, earlier he lays the "boots to it" No magic.

Check the center console for a trunk release button.
Also, if your car doesn't have a passenger airbag, you can look in the glovebox as some cars still in 96 were made with the trunk release there.
Alternatively, you can fold your back seats down and crawl in the trunk with a flathead screwdriver and a flashlight and jimmy the latch free.
