Your experiences with Petco grooming?
I want to try the grooming at Petco for my Golden Retriever. I know it varies upon location, but if you've ever had your dog groomed at Petco, how was your experience, and how much did you pay? Were the groomers knowledgable? My main reason for wanting to get the dog groomed at Petco is because I do not have a high velocity dryer capable of "blowing out" loose undercoat hairs, which I heard works well for shedding. And while I'm there, I might as well have them brush the dogs teeth for me (hopefully, they have some all natural options). I haven't been able to find any professional groomers nearby with good reviews, unfortunately. So I'm thinking of giving Petco a try, although I'm a bit worried about the experience of the staff. Or, should I use my vet's grooming services instead?
Thanks!

If you're looking for a bath and blow out, then i would say it wouldn't hurt to try them out and see how they do.
However Petco and Petsmart grooming services are NOT known to be "top quality". They're good enough for baths, brush outs, nails, and shave downs but do NOT tend to be knowledgeable on many breed clips or breed designs.
Many of the groomers there tend to have little to no training/experience. When i went to apply at Petsmart they did NOT require previous experience/training (not even canine experience) and would have one of their current people train you "on the job" - which isn't terrible (many good groomers learn through apprenticeship) however when speaking with the people that would be training newbies i found them to be lacking in knowledge all around. I had an eight week grooming course behind me and i knew more than some of these five year plus employees.....
Needless to say i did not finish applying and i now work at a boarding/grooming/day care place.
I would NOT expect them to know how to neaten up your dog into a "golden retriever trim". But a bath and blow out should be fine with them. I would expect the price for a bath to be anywhere form $25 up. Extra for teeth.
Add - I brought my dog to Petsmart once for a quick clip before i became a groomer myself. We keep her in a schnauzer trim. The lines where set and there, easy to follow. But they didn't follow the lines and put her in a cocker/spaniel trim.

When we lived in Az. and had our two Min. Schnauzers I took them to Petco and didn't have any problems. I am back in Ill. now and my GSD goes into my vet for his bath in the winter. Go in and talk to them and see what they say and while you are there look around and check it out.

It really depends on the store.
At the Petco near me I know some of the groomers are knowledgeable and some are not.
What bothers me is how long the dogs have to wait, and how long the process is. We have taken them some of our shelter dogs to groom and the dog is in there for the entire day.
On the other hand, my mother uses a mobile groomer, and her dog is only gone for about an hour.
Ask other people in your area who have dogs that need grooming, and see who they recommend.

Ive only taken my mastiff in once to have his nails done, because hes quite large and he doesnt like getting his nails done and he kicks like crazy, anyway i took him into petco and the lady wanted me to go in the back with her and hold Tank for her while she clipped his nails. I dont know if anyone agrees with this, but when I go into a place of business to have a service done I should not be asked to help them. Thats what they have employees for. Thats like going into a restaurant and having the waitress tell you to help yourself to the drinks, in my opinion.
So i know that I will not be taking any of my dogs to petco again to have any services done.
Oh ya, i think they charged me like $12 or something for a job that she spent literally not even a minute on. And he had hang nails that were really sharp too.
I would suggest finding a small local business. They usually have a lot more training and are more caring to the dogs.

please just groom your dog yourself. a de shedding brush is better than any dryer they may have. You must show proof of rabies to get your dog groomed at many grooming places, but there is so much more your dog can get from the groomer (or even the vets office). I do my own grooming and it is a bonding time. I can not imagine dropping my dog of at a strange place with strange people, and leaving them there for hours. Your dog can not come home and tell you what their experience was at the groomers, You can however get a good idea from behavior changes if you are in tune,
The tools a groomer uses is used on many dogs with God knows what. Do you KNOW they use good sterilization methods? Do you know if they are kind hearted with scared dogs? You cant know because you are not there when your dog is being groomed. YouTube has many dog grooming videos that are breed specific. The scariest thing for me is cutting black nails (best to sand black nails), the grossest is expressing anal glands (properly fed dogs seldom need this)

No matter where you take your dog you want someone who is patient, knowledgeable., and gentle!! I groom my own dog, because I know ONE bad experience and it takes a Long time for that dog to learn to trust non-family members. Just because someone has done it for years is no guarantee. I'm not trying to scare you.. I'm trying to lay reality on you. You are doing a good thing by asking around.

I did not have a good experience with my local Petco grooming department. I took my two Great Danes in for a bath there, and when I went to pick them up their nails had not been trimmed (which is supposed to be part of the groom) and they both had large lumps on top of their heads, which the groomer refused to even acknowledge. Needless to say none of my dogs have ever gone back there, and I have since found better ways to clean them up.

I once took Rusty, my Australian Cattle Dog, to be groomed at Petco. When I left him they told me that he had a lot of extra hair on him and needed a good brushing. I thought that was fine, but I didn't know it was going to cause him pain. When I picked him up, his skin was very irritated. The entire next day he was shaking. Keep in mind that this is a 60 lb dog! I took him to the vet and they told me he had an ear infection, which he didn't have before he went to Petco. Stay away from them. Its been 2 months and Rusty still has scars from them. If you care at all about your dog, stay away from Petco. Find another groomer!
A friend of mine took their dog to be groomed at Petco about a month after I took my dog. I warned them, but they wouldn't listen. She now says she wish she would have listened. She brought her dog in, a German Shepherd Dog, and he was in perfect shape. When she picked him up, he looked like someone had beat him. He couldn't even stand up. He constantly cried. It took 4 days for their dog to be back to normal. Stay away from Petco grooming. They are the worst!
