What is medicaid in the States? Is it anything like welfare is in the UK?

And how do you get it?

In the UK you've got to have a kid to get the good cash. It's good whilst you're still of child bearing age but once those year are over then there's not much of a future.

Medicaid is a program that covers health care costs for people in certain groups who are also very low income. It varies state to state but in general you must be 200% below the federal poverty level, have minor children, be pregnant, disabled, a new immigrant, under age 21 or over age 65. Next year Medicaid expands to include more groups of people. If you qualify for Medicaid, the state and federal government share the total cost of your medical bills, if you have no share of cost and that depends on your income and family size. You do apply for Medicaid at the welfare office.

Medicaid is for anyone that doesn't get enough income to pay for health insurance.
